Les Hauts de la Gaffeliere 2017
Made predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Saint-Émilion wines tend to have a rich, mouth-drying tannic structure, which is balanced by the more juicy characteristics of plum and black cherry fruit, along with chocolate and sweet spice, developing savory tobacco and cedar characteristics with age.
The best Saint-Émilion wines will exhibit a terrific mineral vein, the result of vines being planted on the region's limestone escarpment. Vines planted on sandy soils tend to produce grapes that make lighter styled wines.
The Gaffelière region is centuries old because the Romans already cultivated vines there. The Malet Roquefort family, the current owner of the castle, has been exploiting this area continuously since the 16th century. A guarantee of both beautiful tradition and modernity. The vineyard extends over a clay-limestone soil, facing south over 22 hectares. The reasons for this are a very precise grading of the vine, while the grape varieties mainly develop Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, and Cabernet-Franc notes of wood and herbs.
The noble red fruit mouth presents a lively and frank attack. The dress is dark, ruby red in total harmony with the nobility of this beautiful Saint-Emilion. It goes wonderfully with delicate dishes, red meat, or even game, without forgetting the cheeses.
